ChatGPT Prompts for Horror Stories: 12 Fiction Packs

ChatGPT prompts for horror stories help you plan and draft fiction from your premise, tone, and hard limits. Every output should be labeled fiction. These prompts do not copy living authors by name and they stay inside the limits you set. Use them for short stories, not for true-crime cosplay or real-person likeness.

Fiction only: no real victims or real people, and no step-by-step self-harm or methods of harm.

Lock the premise and the limits

1. Premise pressure test

Premise: [premise]. List the protagonist's want, the wrongness, and why they cannot simply leave. Stay inside [hard limits]. Label the answer as fiction.

2. Hard limits contract

Hard limits: [list]. Rewrite my premise so it cannot violate them. Call out any line that still risks a limit.

3. Tone without named authors

Tone I want: [tone words]. Describe how dread should feel on the page in my own words. Do not name living authors as style targets.

Build dread on a spine

4. Story spine

From [premise], write want, obstacle, escalation, and ending preference [preference]. Fiction label on top.

5. Scene list with dread beats

Length target: [words]. Outline scenes with one dread beat each (what the reader should feel). Prefer sound, procedure, and absence over gore.

6. Motif map

Motifs: [list]. Map where each appears and how it changes by the end. No new motifs unless I ask.

Draft and revise

7. Opening scene draft

POV and tense: [pov]. Write the opening scene only, toward [length], using [motifs]. Start with "Fiction. Not a true account."

8. Midpoint escalation pass

Here is my opening: [draft]. Write the next scene that escalates without revealing a monster face if my ending preference is lingering dread: [preference].

9. Ending options board

Give 3 ending options (closed, twist, lingering) consistent with [spine]. Keep HardLimits. Label fiction.

Workshop checks

10. AI-filler cut list

Mark vague filler lines in [draft] and suggest concrete replacements from [premise] details only.

11. Fear clarity check

In one paragraph, what is Mara (or my protagonist) afraid will happen if they follow procedure? Use only facts in [draft].

12. Sensitivity self-check

Scan [draft] against [hard limits]. List any risky lines and how to rewrite them without losing dread.

Run the full fiction pack with one prompt

The flagship Horror Story Prompt: Fiction From Premise and Tone builds the spine, scene list, motif map, draft, and revision checklist in one pass. Its example follows night clerk Mara and a ticking storage unit door, labeled fiction throughout.
