12 ChatGPT prompts for resume tailoring: read a posting, choose what to keep or cut, rewrite bullets with proof, and log every version without invented wins.

ChatGPT Prompts for Resume Tailoring: 12 Version Prompts

ChatGPT prompts for resume tailoring turn one master resume into a short, job-specific version: you paste the posting, ChatGPT decides what to keep, cut, and reorder, and every number stays tied to proof you can show. Use the prompts below in a single ChatGPT chat, or in a ChatGPT Project if you keep your master resume there as a file. This page is about versioning one resume across many applications; for a Claude workflow with a requirement-by-requirement match map, see the Claude guide linked at the end.

Read the posting before you touch the resume

1. Repeated-duty finder

Here is a job posting: [posting]. List the 5 to 8 duties or skills it repeats most, in its own wording. Next to each, write "shown" or "not shown" based only on my master resume: [master resume].

2. Must-have versus nice-to-have split

Sort every requirement in [posting] into must-have and nice-to-have, using the posting's own signals (for example "required", "preferred", "bonus"). Do not guess requirements that are not written.

3. Seniority signal check

Based on [posting], what level does this role read as (scope, ownership, who it reports to)? Then point to the 3 bullets in [master resume] that best show that level. Quote them; do not rewrite yet.

Decide what stays on the page

4. Keep, cut, reorder plan

My page limit is [1 or 2] pages. For each role in [master resume], tell me which bullets to keep, which to cut, and the new order for [job title]. Always keep: [bullets]. Explain each cut in five words or fewer.

5. Old role compression

Compress my roles older than [year] into one line each (title, employer, years) plus at most one bullet that matters for [posting]. Keep the original facts.

6. Side project placement

I have these side projects: [projects with links]. Which one, if any, belongs on the [job title] version, and in which section? Do not upgrade a side project into job experience.

Rewrite bullets without inventing wins

7. Proof-locked bullet rewrite

Rewrite these kept bullets toward the wording of [posting]: [bullets]. Any number must appear in my proof notes: [proof notes]. If a number has no proof, drop the number and keep the bullet.

8. Summary from kept bullets only

Write a headline and a three-line summary for [job title] using only facts from these kept bullets: [bullets]. No adjectives like "results-driven" or "passionate".

9. Skills line in the posting's order

List the skills from [posting] that my resume already proves, in the order the posting mentions them. Put anything I do not prove in a separate "talk about it, do not claim it" list.

Version control and final checks

10. Version change log

Compare this tailored version [new version] with [previous version or master resume]. List bullets added back, cut, reworded, and numbers removed. Format it as a short log I can save next to the file.

11. Plain-text paste test

Here is my resume as plain text pasted from the PDF: [text]. Point out broken bullets, merged columns, missing dates, or symbols that did not survive. Do not change the wording.

12. Cover letter handoff

From the "not shown" list [list] and my kept bullets [bullets], suggest two honest cover-letter sentences that address the gap, such as what I am learning now. Nothing I have not done.

Run the full workflow with one prompt

The flagship ChatGPT Resume Tailor: Master Resume to Job Version does all of the above in one pass: posting read, keep and cut plan, proof-locked bullets, summary, skills line, and a change log. Its example tailors an ops analyst resume to a product operations posting, cuts two unrelated bullets, and parks "weekly stakeholder updates" and dbt for the cover letter instead of claiming them.
