ChatGPT Prompts for Goal Setting: 12 to Plan and Keep Going

ChatGPT prompts for goal setting help you choose fewer, clearer goals and turn them into weekly actions that fit the hours you really have. Tell ChatGPT your priorities, your starting point, and your free time, and ask it to show the math so the plan adds up. The 12 prompts below cover choosing goals, planning the work, handling setbacks, and reviewing progress.

These prompts are for planning, not mental health advice. If you are struggling, reach out to a licensed professional, and in a US crisis call or text 988.

Choose the right goals

1. Priority sort

Here is everything I want to work on [list]. Ask me five questions about why each matters and what happens if I wait, then help me pick no more than three for the next [weeks] weeks.

2. Make a goal measurable

Turn this vague goal [goal] into one outcome I can measure by [date], with my current baseline [baseline] and the number that would count as done.

3. Outcome or habit

For each of these goals [list], tell me whether it works better as an outcome goal or a weekly habit, and rewrite it in that form with one sentence on why.

Turn goals into weekly actions

4. Lead actions

For the goal [goal], list the weekly actions I control that most likely lead to it, how long each takes, and which one I should start with if I only have [hours] a week.

5. Time budget check

My free hours are [hours by day]. My planned actions are [list with hours]. Add them up, compare with my free hours, and cut or move actions until no day is over.

6. Milestones by date

Starting [date], set checkpoints at week 4, week 8, and the end of [weeks] weeks for [goal], with the number I should reach at each, and show how you calculated them from [numbers].

Plan for setbacks

7. If-then plans

Last time I set goals, this happened [what went wrong]. Write three if-then plans for my new goals [list] that cover those exact situations.

8. Minimum version

For each weekly action [list], define a minimum version I can do in 10 minutes on a bad week, so I keep the habit without the full session.

9. Restart after a miss

I fell off my plan for [time] because [reason]. Without guilt, help me pick the one action to restart this week and adjust my checkpoints [paste] to stay realistic.

Review and adjust

10. Weekly review

Here is what I planned [paste] and what I did [paste] this week. Give me a short review: wins, misses, the likely reason for each miss, and one change for next week.

11. Checkpoint review

At week [number], my numbers are [paste] against these checkpoints [paste]. Tell me which goals are on track, behind, or ahead, and whether to keep, shrink, or drop each one.

12. End of cycle reset

My [weeks] week goals ended with these results [paste]. Help me decide what to continue, what to stop, and what to start next from my waiting list [list], keeping three goals at most.

Plan 90-day goals in one prompt

The flagship Goal Setting Prompt: 90-Day Goals That Fit Your Real Week takes your life areas, current state, free hours, constraints, past attempts, and start date, and returns three goals, weekly actions, a time budget, a day-by-day schedule, dated checkpoints, if-then plans, and a review routine. Its example plans 6 hours a week against 9.5 free hours, leaving a 3.5 hour buffer.

Keep the plan realistic

Ask ChatGPT to show every calculation and recheck it yourself, since a plan that does not add up fails in week two. Money and health goals here are personal planning only, not financial or medical advice.
